"Icy Fire," conceived by Lampo Leong and his team, stands out as a groundbreaking immersive digital art installation that uses the evocative language of Chinese ink painting to explore the devastating effects of climate change. Developed between 2023 and 2024 in Macao, the project was exhibited at the Macao Museum of Art, Guangdong Museum of Art, Shenzhen Art Museum, and featured in Glow Shenzhen 2024. The installation's compelling narrative is conveyed through a generative video art projection, which transforms the imagery of a glacier from ice to fire, symbolizing the alarming progression of global warming.
The installation's unique approach lies in its seamless integration of traditional hand-painted ink works, digitized and animated using TouchDesigner software. The video art is projected onto one wall, while the remaining walls, ceiling, and floor are lined with acrylic mirrors, creating a fully immersive environment measuring 5.3 meters by 3 meters by 4 meters. As the color palette shifts from cool blues to intense reds, viewers witness the metaphorical melting and burning of ice, culminating in a moment where the text refreezes-offering a hopeful reminder of the potential for collective action to reverse environmental damage.
"Icy Fire" not only advances the boundaries of contemporary ink art but also serves as a powerful call to environmental consciousness. By merging the tactile qualities of classical Chinese painting with cutting-edge digital techniques, Lampo Leong demonstrates the enduring vitality of traditional art forms in addressing modern global challenges. The installation's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award underscores its technical ingenuity, creative vision, and its contribution to raising public awareness about climate change through art.
