Award-Winning Designer Lampo Leong Unveils a Provocative Environmental Health and Pollution Control Project
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Award-winning designer Lampo Leong unveils "Behind Glory," a thought-provoking photographic documentary capturing the heavily polluted and decaying factory campus of Wugang, the Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. This project sheds light on the environmental consequences of China's industrialization and modernization, aiming to provoke viewers into seeking a clean and healthy living environment. The documentary was realized in Wugang, Wuhan, China, in 2019, and was awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2020.
Supported by the Russian and built in 1958, the state-owned Wugang was once a symbol of China's industrialization and modernization. However, the severe environmental pollution caused by such industries is the focus of this community project. Through abstract, lyrical, and somber images, "Behind Glory" reveals the price paid and the consequences behind the economic prosperity, urging viewers to contemplate the true cost of progress.
Utilizing digital photography with a Canon 5DSR and EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens, Lampo Leong's documentary captures the stark reality of Wugang, highlighting the challenges of obtaining permission to photograph the state-owned steel factory and the technical difficulties of navigating the poor and limited conditions of the photo site. The images from "Behind Glory" are intended for offline and online exhibitions, aiming to raise awareness about pollution and public health in the working and living environment.
