Focal Bookcase: Award-Winning Design Merges Architectural Rhythm with Modern Craftsmanship

Focal Bookcase, designed by Yilmaz Dogan, has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Furniture Design Award for 2025, celebrating its innovative approach to furniture design. Drawing inspiration from the balanced symmetry of Neoclassical architecture and the refined details of Art Deco, the Focal Bookcase stands out for its harmonious blend of classical and contemporary aesthetics. The project originated from sketches made during a trip to Paris in 2023 and was meticulously crafted in Ankara, Turkey, in 2024.

The Focal Bookcase distinguishes itself through its vertical brass supports, reminiscent of architectural columns, and asymmetrical grooves along the shelf edges that create a dynamic visual rhythm. Crafted from high-quality wood and brass, the bookcase features CNC-cut surfaces that are hand-finished for exceptional smoothness. The design's open-shelf structure, combined with a closed lower compartment, offers both storage and display options, making it ideal for modern living spaces seeking both elegance and functionality.

One of the key challenges addressed in the design was translating architectural elements into a furniture scale while maintaining structural integrity and visual lightness. Specially developed hidden connection points allow the brass columns to act as structural supports without compromising their delicate form, resulting in shelves that appear to float. The Focal Bookcase's meticulous craftsmanship, luxurious materials, and attention to detail have earned it recognition as a well-designed, practical, and innovative creation that meets professional and industrial standards, contributing to a better living environment.
