Wang Yuchen's "Gondola" electric hydrofoil, inspired by Venetian boat design and unveiled at Milan Design Week 2024, has won the Iron A' Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Award for 2025, recognizing its blend of cultural heritage, modern aesthetics, and sustainable technology in redefining water tourism experiences.

Wang Yuchen, alongside his design team, has reimagined the iconic Venetian gondola as a state-of-the-art electric hydrofoil, merging centuries-old Italian design culture with cutting-edge marine technology. Launched in Qingdao, China, in August 2023 and showcased at Milan Design Week in April 2024, the "Gondola" project has reached its final development stages by June 2024. The vessel's design draws deeply from the curved, moon-like lines and ornate bow detailing of traditional gondolas, while introducing advanced hydrofoil capabilities and a quiet, zero-emission electric motor.
The "Gondola" stands out for its harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Its hull, crafted from aluminum with a platinum metallic finish, is complemented by carbon fiber hydrofoils and composite support structures, ensuring both elegance and performance. The boat's luxurious touches include a canvas canopy woven with metallic filaments and a teak luggage deck, comfortably accommodating up to four passengers. The hydrofoil system allows for seamless transitions between high-speed travel and leisurely cruising, catering to diverse user needs and enhancing the water tourism experience.
Designed with versatility and sustainability in mind, the "Gondola" features rotatable hydrofoils and adjustable propellers for superior maneuverability. Its electric propulsion system ensures a quiet, environmentally friendly ride, making it ideal for urban waterways and ecologically sensitive regions. The project not only pays homage to Venice's rich maritime heritage but also pioneers new research paths for culturally inspired tourism experiences worldwide. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes the "Gondola" as a practical, innovative, and emotionally resonant contribution to the future of marine travel.
