Akira Nakagomi Unveils Honey Drop, a Disaster Prevention Lighting Design Exhibited at New Norma New Standard3
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Akira Nakagomi, a renowned designer from Itoshima-shi, Fukuoka, has unveiled "Honey Drop," a unique disaster prevention lighting design that redefines the concept of emergency items. Inspired by Japan's susceptibility to natural disasters, Nakagomi's creation seamlessly integrates disaster prevention with everyday life, offering a versatile solution for both emergency situations and daily illumination.
The Honey Drop is a glass container resembling dripping honey, placed on a wooden pedestal with a rechargeable LED. In times of emergency, the honey can serve as emergency food, while the pedestal transforms into a flashlight. This innovative product aims to add color to everyday life, challenging the traditional notion of disaster prevention items as solely for emergency use.
The design process involved extensive research into emergency items, leading Nakagomi to discover the visual, nutritional, and sterilizing properties of honey. The project, which commenced in January 2022, culminated in the completion of Honey Drop in December 2022, with an exhibition at New Norma New Standard3 in November 2022.
Akira Nakagomi's Honey Drop has received the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2023. This accolade recognizes the design's exceptional innovation, professionalism, and contribution to societal wellbeing, showcasing transcendent excellence and advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
