Forma: A Contemporary Chair Celebrating Heritage Craftsmanship and Material Innovation

Forma, designed by Jae Choi and completed in Providence, Rhode Island in May 2023, stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of traditional craftsmanship in modern design. Drawing inspiration from the evolution of saddlery, Choi reimagined the ancient technique of wet molding-historically used in equestrian gear-to create a chair that seamlessly blends structure and fluidity. The result is a piece that not only serves as functional seating but also as a sculptural statement, embodying both comfort and refined artistry.

What sets Forma apart is its innovative use of vegetable-tanned leather, meticulously shaped through wet molding to achieve intricate forms that transition effortlessly between softness and rigidity. This method, combined with a foundation of MDF and steel, enhances the chair's durability and sculptural precision. Choi's approach pushes the boundaries of leather manipulation, highlighting the material's potential for both structural integrity and expressive design, while honoring the heritage of leatherworking.

The project's development involved extensive hands-on experimentation, exploring the flexibility and limitations of leather through material-driven research.
