Wenkai Xue and his design team have been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for Tubedex, a groundbreaking bus station concept inspired by industrial cityscapes, which reimagines public transport infrastructure with smart, user-centric features and a bold visual identity.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tubedex, designed by Wenkai Xue and his team, is a new bus station concept developed for post-industrial cities, recently recognized with the Bronze A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2025. Drawing inspiration from the ubiquitous industrial pipes found in urban landscapes, Tubedex transforms these symbols of the past into a modern, functional, and visually striking public facility. The design aims to preserve the memory of industrial city clusters while challenging negative stereotypes associated with traditional industrial environments.
The bus station stands out for its deconstructed circular tube elements, which lend both elegance and a sense of continuity to its form. Its interactive interface, highlighted by a bold red color scheme, provides real-time information such as bus arrival times, weather updates, and passenger density. This user-focused approach ensures that commuters receive transparent and intuitive data, enhancing the overall transit experience. The modular structure, crafted from brushed stainless steel, integrates solar panels for energy efficiency and uses luminous LEDs with frosted glass to illuminate the space, balancing aesthetics with sustainability.
Developed at the LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and completed at the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA between February and March 2025, Tubedex addresses key challenges in public transport systems, such as rigid information flow and lack of interactivity. The design's innovative use of smart city strategies and IoT technologies enables dynamic information management and fosters a more connected, efficient urban environment. Tubedex not only revitalizes the image of bus stations but also sets a new standard for the integration of art, technology, and public utility in city infrastructure.
