Travis Baldwin unveils Britannia, the largest offshore wind turbine, designed to evoke nautical heritage and aspirations, set to revolutionize renewable energy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Britannia: A Mega-Scale Offshore Wind Turbine

Travis Baldwin introduces Britannia, a groundbreaking 10MW offshore wind turbine designed to pay homage to the nautical heritage of Clipper ships. The exterior styling differentiates Clipper turbines and is designed to evoke company heritage and inspiration. The turbine is the largest in the world and the first to produce 10MW of power, setting a new standard for renewable energy.

The Britannia is not only a feat of engineering but also a work of art, drawing inspiration from the Winged Victory of Samothrace sculpture. The design integrates function and form, with the placement of radiators creating a galley-like form and walkways under the wing forms, while air scoops serve as stylistic elements.

Internally, the architecture is optimized for crew comfort, with space for work and sleep within the turbine to service the generators. The design also addresses the challenges of wind turbine aesthetics and efficiency, offering a solution with its mega-scale and efficient engineering solutions.

Engineering teams meticulously developed the generators, gearing, blades, and steel structure, with a focus on cooling the large generators to prevent fires. The exterior panels are made from fiberglass composite mounted to an internal i-beam structure, while the blades are crafted from a single composite molding. The modular construction facilitates assembly, allowing for transportation via highways and ships to the assembly site.

Britannia is a testament to innovation and sustainability, with the potential to provide electricity for the instantaneous demand of 7,500 homes at once. The project, led by Jim Dehlson and the design team, commenced in December 2008 and was completed in March 2010, marking a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector.
