Shellmine Kids, a children's tableware set designed by YOHEI MURAI using eggshell-based biomass resin, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its unique blend of environmental responsibility, child-friendly functionality, and educational value, marking a significant step forward in sustainable product design from Japan.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
YOHEI MURAI's Shellmine Kids tableware set, developed in collaboration with Fukui Craft, pioneers a new direction in sustainable children's products by utilizing eggshell-based biomass resin. The project, initiated in August 2022 and completed in July 2023, addresses the pressing global issue of plastic waste by transforming discarded eggshells into durable, attractive tableware for infants and toddlers. The set was showcased at the GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2023 and has now been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids and Children's Products category for 2025.
Unlike conventional plastic tableware, Shellmine Kids makes its eco-friendly origins visible through a playful chick motif and a distinctive blend of white and brown eggshell coloring. This design choice not only highlights the innovative use of 57% eggshell content-certified with the Japanese Biomass Mark 55-but also encourages families to make conscious, environmentally responsible purchasing decisions. The set's thoughtful ergonomics, including a weighted base and textured surfaces, help prevent spills and support children's independence during meals, while the shapes and surfaces are optimized for easy cleaning and dishwasher compatibility, based on feedback from over 120 parents.
Shellmine Kids stands out for its patented manufacturing process, which reduces CO2 emissions by 37% and petroleum-derived components by 44% compared to standard resin tableware. The set's robust, ceramic-like feel is achieved without sacrificing crack resistance, ensuring longevity even as children grow-thanks to a removable chicken dish and universally accessible design. By making the sustainable material an integral part of the product's story and appearance, Shellmine Kids not only addresses market challenges posed by higher costs but also fosters environmental awareness among both parents and children, setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious design in everyday products.
