The Monomorph: A Modular Chair Redefining Simplicity and Sustainability in Furniture Design

The Monomorph chair, conceived and realized by Wouter van Riet Paap in Utrecht, The Netherlands, has received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award for 2025 in the Furniture Design category. Inspired by the concept of a "monomorph" in nature-an organism composed of a single shape-this chair exemplifies the designer's pursuit of efficiency and sustainability through the use of 39 identical, CNC-cut plywood elements connected by steel rods. The result is a striking, comfortable fauteuil that is as intriguing visually as it is functional.

Developed after extensive research and prototyping, The Monomorph stands out for its innovative approach to standardization in design. Each triangular, rounded element is cut from a single sheet of plywood, minimizing material waste and streamlining production. The chair is available in painted finishes or an untreated RAW edition, and can be easily assembled by anyone with an Allen wrench. Alternative versions use 16 identical elements combined with paper cord, vegan leather, or repurposed truck tarp for the seat and backrest, demonstrating the design's adaptability and modularity.

Wouter van Riet Paap's architectural background informed the chair's development, focusing on how standardized elements can serve creative design rather than limit it. The Monomorph's construction allows for flat-pack transport and simple assembly, making it both accessible and environmentally conscious. The chair's unique form and build process have set a new benchmark for sustainable, user-friendly furniture, earning it recognition for integrating industry best practices and technical excellence.
