Yuhan Zhang's award-winning Eden Rise project proposes a mile-high, self-sustaining vertical community in Chicago, integrating advanced green technologies and vertical farming to address urban food deserts, promote sustainability, and redefine the city's architectural identity for the next half century.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Eden Rise, designed by Yuhan Zhang and Dreama Simeng Lin, is a groundbreaking proposal for Chicago's future skyline, reimagining urban life through a vertical eco living community. Inspired by the city's water landscape and addressing the pressing issue of food deserts, Eden Rise integrates vertical farms within a mile-high skyscraper, enabling fresh produce to be grown locally and distributed directly to residents. The project's organic, water droplet-inspired form not only pays homage to Chicago's natural environment but also extends the city's green belt into the sky, creating a new paradigm for sustainable urban development.
The four interconnected towers of Eden Rise are engineered with advanced diagrid exoskeletons and tubular structures, maximizing structural integrity while allowing abundant natural light and airflow. The design incorporates state-of-the-art green technologies, including cloud harvesting, rainwater recycling, and strategically placed wind turbines, ensuring the building's self-sufficiency in water and energy. Vertical farming systems are seamlessly integrated into the core, directly addressing food inequality by providing fresh, nutritious produce to the community and reducing the city's carbon footprint.
Eden Rise is envisioned as a vibrant, multi-functional community, blending residential, commercial, educational, and recreational spaces within a single vertical ecosystem. Sky terraces at various levels serve as communal hubs, fostering social interaction and a strong connection to nature. The project's holistic approach not only tackles the technical and social challenges of food deserts but also sets a new standard for urban architecture-one that actively restores and enriches the environment. Recognized with the Silver A' Futuristic Design Award in 2025, Eden Rise exemplifies innovation, sustainability, and a bold vision for the future of city living.
