Black Moon: Reinventing the Lunar Display with Extraterrestrial Materials and Swiss Precision

Les Ateliers Louis Moinet has announced the release of the Black Moon, a revolutionary timepiece that marks a new chapter in horological innovation. Officially unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2024 in Switzerland, the Black Moon stands out as the first watch to feature an astronomical moon display crafted from two authentic lunar meteorites. This limited edition of 60 pieces pays tribute to the brand's deep-rooted connection with astronomy and its founder's pioneering spirit.

The Black Moon's central feature is a slightly domed disc displaying the full and new moon, each represented by fragments of rare lunar meteorites: the dark-hued Dhofar 457 and the lighter Gadamis 005. These extraterrestrial materials are meticulously sculpted and set at the heart of the watch, creating a striking visual and tactile link to the cosmos. The astronomical moon complication driving the display is engineered with a sophisticated 135-tooth gear, achieving a remarkable precision that deviates by only one day every 122 years.

Encased in polished and satin-finished grade 5 titanium, the Black Moon weighs just 18 grams and measures 40.7 mm in diameter. The aventurine dial, floating indexes, and domed sapphire crystal enhance the sense of depth and mystery, while luminescent hands and indexes ensure clarity in all lighting conditions. The watch's innovative sector seconds subdial at 9 o'clock and the red-framed lunar indicator at 3 o'clock offer intuitive operation and a modern aesthetic. Developed over two years in collaboration with Concepto and meteorite experts, the Black Moon exemplifies Les Ateliers Louis Moinet's commitment to creativity, exclusivity, and technical excellence. This achievement was recognized with the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its world-class innovation and artistry.
