Oliver Schütte's No Footprint Wood House, located on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, has been awarded the Platinum A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative, bioclimatic, and regenerative approach to residential architecture, setting new benchmarks in sustainable building and community-driven development.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The No Footprint Wood House, designed by Oliver Schütte, is a groundbreaking residential project that seamlessly blends modern prefabrication with Costa Rica's rich tradition of sustainability. Drawing inspiration from iconic prefabricated homes like Jean Prouvé's Maison Tropicale and Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House, Schütte's design responds to the urgent need for carbon-neutral living by offering modular, customizable homes that minimize environmental impact. Situated along the lush southern Pacific coast, the house is part of the award-winning No Footprint House series, which champions passive design strategies and the use of locally sourced, regenerative materials.
Central to the project is its flexible three-by-three-meter spatial grid, allowing homeowners to tailor layouts to their specific needs and budgets. The featured wooden house comprises two private, double-level wings flanking a dramatic nine-by-nine-meter double-height social space, all constructed entirely from laminated wood sourced from local providers. This modular approach not only streamlines production and delivery but also enables off-grid configurations, complete with on-site energy generation and wastewater treatment, making the design adaptable to remote locations and diverse climates.
Beyond its architectural innovation, the No Footprint Wood House is a catalyst for community engagement and research. The project's interdisciplinary team collaborates with universities and local suppliers to refine building techniques, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability. Clients are encouraged to participate in broader regenerative strategies, such as reforestation and permaculture, ensuring the project's positive impact extends well beyond its physical footprint. By uniting stakeholders across sectors, Schütte's design addresses the global challenge of decarbonization, offering tangible solutions for a more sustainable future.
