Pasadena-based designer Lincoln Chen has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for Ori, a minimalist floor lamp inspired by Japanese origami and crafted from a single sheet of recyclable aluminum, recognized for its elegant form, eco-friendly construction, and manufacturing efficiency.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lincoln Chen's Ori floor lamp has captured the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award for 2025, distinguishing itself among global entries for its inventive approach to lighting design. Developed in Pasadena, California, Ori draws inspiration from the art of Japanese origami, transforming a flat sheet of recyclable aluminum into a striking, three-dimensional lamp through a series of precise folds. The result is a floor lamp that seamlessly blends elegance, sustainability, and practicality.
Ori stands out for its use of a single material-9 gauge 5052 aluminum alloy-eliminating the need for welding and reducing production complexity. The lamp's reverse-folded top forms an integrated lampshade, providing soft, glare-free illumination ideal for reading or ambient lighting. With a compact footprint and a height of 35 inches (889mm), Ori is designed for versatility and ease of movement, making it suitable for a variety of living spaces. Its minimalist aesthetic breaks from conventional geometric styles, offering a refined balance between form and function.
The design process for Ori involved extensive research and prototyping, with Chen experimenting with high-GSM paper models to optimize both material usage and visual impact. The biggest challenge was achieving structural stability and manufacturing efficiency while maintaining a minimalist silhouette. Ori's success at the A' Design Award highlights the growing demand for sustainable, thoughtfully designed lighting solutions that prioritize both environmental responsibility and user experience. Currently in the prototyping phase, Ori exemplifies how traditional craft principles can inspire innovative, contemporary design.
