Buenos Aires-based designer Alexis Zapata has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for Lumin, a mechanical pencil crafted entirely from aluminum, symbolizing personal introspection and the transformation of emptiness into light. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lumin, designed by Alexis Zapata, is a mechanical pencil that transcends traditional stationery by embodying the journey from emptiness to illumination. Conceived as a deeply personal exploration, Lumin reflects the designer's introspection and desire to materialize intangible emotions. The pencil's minimalist form and exclusive use of aluminum highlight its authenticity and the concept of light emerging from absence, making it both a functional tool and a symbolic object.
Unlike conventional mechanical pencils, Lumin is crafted without internal mechanisms. Instead, it relies on the natural elasticity of aluminum alloy 2011 to securely hold 5.5 mm graphite, offering a tactile and intuitive experience. Each pencil is meticulously produced using advanced CNC machining and finished by hand, ensuring uniqueness and quality. The packaging, designed to represent emptiness, further reinforces the theme of transformation and self-discovery, while each unit is authenticated with an engraved serial number.
The creation of Lumin was marked by significant challenges, from sourcing small-batch CNC manufacturing to overcoming economic hurdles in Argentina. Initially developed as a protest against the diminishing role of hands-on education during the pandemic, Lumin has since become a coveted item among designers, architects, and artists. Its recognition at prestigious events such as INNOVAR 2023 and the Sello Buen Diseño 2025, alongside the Silver A' Design Award, underscores its impact as both an artistic statement and a technical achievement. Zapata's commitment to making emotion tangible through design is evident in every aspect of Lumin, inviting users to reflect on their own inner light.
