Kromme Coffee Table: Award-Winning Sculptural Furniture Inspired by Nature's Flow

The Kromme Coffee Table, designed by Robert Wakeland, stands out as a testament to innovative craftsmanship and nature-inspired artistry. Conceived in New York City and completed in upstate New York between July 2023 and August 2024, the table draws its inspiration from the continuous flow of ocean waves. Wakeland's vision was to create a unique, minimalist piece using a single, fluid strip of solid walnut veneer, resulting in a bold yet elegantly simple design that serves as both functional furniture and a sculptural statement.

Constructed entirely from bent laminated walnut veneer, the Kromme Table employs 1/16" strips molded into a graceful, wave-like curve, supported by discreet aluminum elements for added strength. The glass top not only enhances the table's functionality but also provides an unobstructed view of the intricate wood grain beneath, emphasizing the natural beauty and craftsmanship of the piece. The design process prioritized sustainability, utilizing knife-cut veneers to minimize waste and incorporating less desirable wood sections within the inner layers, ensuring efficient material use.

Wakeland overcame significant technical challenges in realizing the Kromme Table, opting for bent lamination over steam bending to achieve the desired flowing form while reducing material waste. The meticulous molding process, anchored by dovetail sliding joinery, ensured precision and stability during construction. The result is a coffee table that invites conversation, blending artistic expression with everyday utility and exemplifying Wakeland's commitment to both design excellence and environmental responsibility.

The Kromme Coffee Table's recognition with the Silver A' Furniture Design Award 2025 highlights its outstanding technical and artistic merit, celebrating a piece that brings amazement and wonder to contemporary interiors.
