Dunhuang Lute: A Fusion of Traditional Chinese Artistry and Contemporary Educational Toys

Xinming Liu's Dunhuang Lute project reimagines the iconic pipa instrument and the vibrant figures from Dunhuang murals, blending centuries-old Chinese artistry with modern design sensibilities. Developed in Beijing from January to September 2022, the project features collectible toy figures and an illustrated book, both meticulously crafted to reflect the aesthetic styles and colors of historical periods from the Northern Dynasties to the Song-Yuan era. Each character is inspired by mural imagery and ancient sculpture, with makeup and attire faithfully translated into contemporary illustration, offering a fresh, engaging way for teens to explore Chinese history and culture.

The Dunhuang Lute toy set stands out for its educational value and interactive design. Users can assemble modular toy figures, each representing distinct cultural elements, fostering a hands-on connection with historical art. The accompanying illustrated book deepens this experience by narrating the stories behind the murals and tracing the evolution of the pipa across dynasties. This dual approach not only makes the rich heritage of Dunhuang accessible but also transforms traditional art into a tangible, relatable learning tool for younger audiences.

Realized through advanced modeling in ZBrush, 3D printing, and KeyShot rendering, the figures come in two sizes and are designed for both visual appeal and educational engagement. The project overcame significant challenges in translating two-dimensional mural art into three-dimensional toys, ensuring historical accuracy and expressive craftsmanship. By merging digital illustration with physical play, Dunhuang Lute exemplifies how traditional culture can be revitalized for contemporary audiences, a quality recognized by its Silver A' Design Award win in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products category in 2025.
