London-based designer Wongsun Yoo has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for his Osso chair, a sculptural piece inspired by Oriental architecture and natural bone structures, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to create ergonomic, sustainable seating.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wongsun Yoo's Osso chair, recently awarded Silver at the 2025 A' Furniture Design Awards, stands out for its unique synthesis of architectural principles, natural inspiration, and advanced manufacturing. Designed in Paris and realized in collaboration with French cabinetmaker Brimbois, Osso draws from the elegance of traditional Oriental architecture and the organic strength of bone structures. The chair's name, meaning "bone" in Italian, reflects its spine-like backrest and the intricate joinery that mimics the interlocking of bones, resulting in a visually dynamic and structurally robust form.
Unlike conventional seating, Osso employs a cross-bracing timber structure with curved beams and an open-back frame, emphasizing negative space and lightness. The concave seat is ergonomically contoured to support the human body, reducing pressure points and enhancing comfort without the need for bulky upholstery. The double columns at the back seamlessly accommodate horizontal components, reinforcing both the chair's harmony and its architectural rhythm. The striking silhouette, blending Baroque curves with minimalist restraint, elevates Osso from functional furniture to a sculptural statement piece.
Production of the Osso chair bridges cutting-edge technology with artisanal tradition. Precision CNC machining shapes 3-5cm timber planks into modular components, while century-old joinery techniques and luxurious finishes are meticulously applied by Brimbois. Locally sourced ash wood from Franche-Comte ensures sustainability, and a detachable upholstered plate offers added versatility. Osso's debut at Paris Design Week 2023 garnered acclaim from industry professionals, leading to refinements such as adjustable timber toes for customizable seat height. The chair's seamless black-stained finish highlights the wood grain, marrying modern aesthetics with timeless craftsmanship.
