Yanci Chen's "Crevice" art museum in Weihai, China, has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative approach to blending Shandong's terraced landscapes and waterways with contemporary architecture, creating a cultural destination that fosters dialogue between tradition, nature, and modernity.

The "Crevice" art museum, designed by Yanci Chen and her team, stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture with the natural and cultural landscape of Shandong, China. Drawing inspiration from Confucian philosophy and the region's distinctive topography, the project reinterprets ancient traditions through bold triangular forms and fluid pathways that echo the mountains and waterways of the area. The museum's design not only pays homage to the local environment but also fosters a unique journey for visitors, guiding them through spaces that evoke both inner tranquility and cultural reflection.
Utilizing advanced parametric tools such as Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, the design team meticulously refined the museum's complex roof structure and spatial layout. This computational approach ensured both structural efficiency and material economy, while environmental analysis tools guided the integration of sustainable strategies. The result is a 10,000-square-meter building on a 6,000-square-meter site, where every detail-from adaptable exhibition areas to natural lighting-serves to enhance the visitor experience and encourage engagement with art, nature, and local heritage.
The realization of "Crevice" overcame significant creative and technical challenges, including the distillation of vernacular architectural features and the integration of Shandong's intangible cultural heritage, such as Rushan Qinshu and Shandong yangko. The museum's flexible spaces and interactive installations invite visitors to immerse themselves in traditional Chinese culture, while the waterway motif symbolizes transformation and discovery. Recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award, "Crevice" sets a new standard for contemporary museum architecture, demonstrating the power of design to bridge past and present, and to inspire awe and wonder in all who visit.
