Desen: A Contemporary Marble Coffee Table Collection Inspired by Mediterranean Heritage

Ruya Akyol's Desen collection stands out for its fusion of historical inspiration and modern design sensibilities. Drawing from Mediterranean motifs and traditional tile patterns, Desen reimagines centuries-old ornamentation through a contemporary lens. The tables' modular, interlocking forms allow for endless configurations, offering both sculptural presence and practical versatility in today's interiors. Each table features a recessed top for secure placement of items and is constructed with hollow interiors to minimize material use while maintaining structural integrity.

Crafted in Turkey from responsibly sourced marbles such as Travertine, Karaman Beige, Kale Bordeaux, and Afyon White, Desen tables are precision-cut and meticulously finished. The collection comprises three heights-350mm, 400mm, and 450mm-each with a consistent width and depth of 400mm, enabling users to mix and match pieces to suit their space. The lightweight, hollow design makes rearrangement effortless, while the natural richness of marble brings unique texture and elegance to every table.

The design process behind Desen involved extensive research into Ottoman art and Islamic geometric patterns, resulting in a collection that balances cultural heritage with modern functionality. Overcoming the challenge of creating tables that are both iconic as standalone pieces and harmonious in combination, Akyol's approach highlights the timeless appeal of symmetry, repetition, and modularity.
