Inside Out: A Versatile Toy-Inspired Furniture Piece Celebrated for Creativity and Imagination

Nao Fujimura's "Inside Out" redefines the boundaries between toys and furniture, offering a unique product that encourages creativity and interaction across generations. Drawing inspiration from the charming shapes of children's toys, Fujimura envisioned a piece that could serve as a stool, mini table, or playful puzzle, sparking curiosity and wonder in both kids and adults. The design's versatility allows it to function as a small table and stool set for children, or as two stools for parents and children to use together, fostering shared experiences and imaginative play.

Crafted from white ash wood and finished with vibrant car paint, "Inside Out" features a smooth, rounded surface reminiscent of classic toys. The light green, three-legged stool can be inserted from any side of the white box, inviting users to experiment with different configurations and uses. This open-ended approach encourages users to discover their own ways of interacting with the piece, promoting pure imagination and intuitive play. The product's dimensions-300mm wide, 300mm deep, and 420mm high-were carefully considered to accommodate a variety of uses while maintaining a playful, approachable aesthetic.

The design process focused on creating a mysterious yet inviting form that does not immediately reveal its function, prompting users to engage with it thoughtfully. The contrasting color scheme-simple white on the outside and bright green inside-adds to the intrigue, making both children and adults want to peek inside and explore. Overcoming challenges in ergonomics and multi-functionality, Fujimura ensured that "Inside Out" remains both practical and delightful, embodying the spirit of play and discovery. The project, which ran from June to September 2024, has now been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award, celebrating its contribution to quality of life and creative design.
