Firefly Lamp: A Fusion of Tradition, Innovation, and Versatility in Lighting Design

Mahya Hoseini's Firefly lamp has been recognized with the Bronze A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2025, celebrating its inventive approach to lighting. Developed in Tehran and completed in October 2024, Firefly draws inspiration from both the gentle glow of fireflies and the nostalgic ambiance of pre-electric lamps, offering a unique blend of heritage and contemporary design. The lamp's form and function are crafted to evoke a sense of place, particularly within Iranian and Middle Eastern architectural contexts, while delivering modern usability.

Firefly stands out for its adaptability, serving as both a wall and desk lamp. Its innovative design features a 360-degree rotating opaque glass globe mounted on a lathe-turned wooden base, allowing for flexible positioning, even on sloped ceilings. The lamp incorporates two distinct light sources: a soft, low-intensity glow ideal for night lighting or creating a tranquil atmosphere, and a brighter source beneath the globe for reading or task illumination. This duality makes Firefly an excellent choice for hotel rooms and residential spaces seeking both ambiance and practicality.

The design process was shaped by a research-driven approach, aiming to reinterpret traditional lighting elements without relying on conventional decorative motifs. Hoseini overcame material constraints imposed by the client-a manufacturer specializing in wooden lighting-by skillfully combining wood and glass to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality. The result is a lamp that not only enhances the quality of life in its environment but also serves as a testament to the designer's commitment to merging art, architecture, and user experience. The Firefly lamp's recognition at the A' Design Award underscores its contribution to the evolution of lighting design and its positive impact on contemporary interiors.
