Matthias Ambros has introduced the Andorinha chair, a Silver A' Design Award winner for 2025, blending Brazilian sensibility, ergonomic innovation, and advanced plywood molding. Debuting at Fuorisalone 2025 in Milan, the chair's floating backrest and seamless construction set a new standard for lightweight, adaptable seating solutions in contemporary furniture design.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Andorinha chair, designed by Matthias Ambros, stands as a testament to the fusion of engineering precision and contemporary aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the graceful flight of swallows, the chair embodies lightness, adaptability, and connection-qualities reflected in its name, which means "swallow" in Portuguese. Developed through a holistic process that included user research, AI-driven form exploration, and traditional sketching, Andorinha is engineered for versatility and comfort while maintaining a refined, minimalist presence.
Central to the Andorinha's innovation is its floating backrest, achieved through a pioneering two-stage plywood molding process that embeds a hidden structural element within the backrest. This technique allows for invisible fixation, creating a seamless and visually striking silhouette while ensuring superior ergonomic support and durability. The chair's CNC-bent tubular steel frame, laser-welded for precision, complements the lightweight, precision-molded plywood seat, resulting in a piece that is both robust and easy to handle.
Andorinha's development was rooted in extensive research, including user interviews and surveys conducted in São Paulo to understand ergonomic and aesthetic preferences. The design overcame significant technical challenges, particularly in perfecting the advanced molding techniques required for the floating backrest. The project began in late 2023, with the final prototype completed in June 2024. Its debut at Fuorisalone 2025 marks a milestone for Brazilian design, symbolizing resilience and innovation in response to contemporary challenges. The chair's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award underscores its outstanding expertise, technical excellence, and artistic merit, positioning Andorinha as a sophisticated solution for diverse environments.
