Okinawa-based designer Chinen Mizuki has been honored with the Silver A' Furniture Design Award 2025 for her Musubi stool, a foldable cedar wood seat inspired by traditional Japanese motifs and techniques, blending cultural heritage with modern practicality.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chinen Mizuki, a furniture designer from Okinawa, Japan, has received the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award 2025 for her latest creation, the Musubi stool. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Shinto concept of "Musubi"-the idea that life and objects are formed through meaningful connections-Mizuki's design pays homage to Japanese culture while offering a practical solution for modern living. The stool's form is based on the bow-knotted mizuhiki, a decorative cord traditionally used in celebratory gift wrapping, symbolizing joy and connection.
The Musubi stool stands out for its unique blend of artistry and utility. Crafted from lightweight yet durable cedar wood, the stool employs a traditional paper hinge technique, commonly found in Japanese folding screens, to join its components without the need for nails or screws. This approach not only preserves the integrity of the material but also allows the stool to be easily assembled or folded for compact storage. Its linear appearance from the front transforms into a gentle curve when viewed from an angle, reflecting both simplicity and subtle elegance.
Developed in Okinawa since January 2025, the Musubi stool is the result of extensive research into traditional Japanese materials and construction methods. Mizuki overcame significant challenges in ensuring the stool's strength and durability using only wood and paper, repeatedly refining the design to balance resilience with ease of disassembly. The result is a versatile piece of furniture that embodies both the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship and the demands of contemporary lifestyles, making it ideal for homes where space and adaptability are valued.
The recognition by the A' Design Award jury highlights the Musubi stool's technical excellence, creative innovation, and its ability to evoke positive emotions through design. As a Silver award winner, the Musubi stool stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of cultural heritage in shaping the future of furniture design.
