Akhalteke Lounge Chair: Fusing Equine Inspiration with Sustainable, Experiential Design

Tehran-based designer Amin Mohammadyari has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Furniture Design Award 2025 for his Akhalteke lounge chair, a piece that reimagines the act of sitting by drawing inspiration from the elegance of the Akhal-Teke horse breed and the designer's own childhood experiences with horseback riding. The chair's name pays homage to the renowned Turkmen horses, reflecting both its dynamic form and the deep connection between humans and equines throughout history.

Akhalteke stands out for its innovative approach to seating, establishing a two-way interaction between user and chair. Rather than simply providing a place to sit, the design evokes the sensation of riding a horse for the first time, transforming sitting into an active, engaging experience. Mohammadyari's vision was to create a form that users willingly embrace, inspired by the subtle cues of equine anatomy and the historical significance of the saddle as one of humanity's earliest seating solutions.

Environmental responsibility is at the core of Akhalteke's construction, utilizing bio-composites made from hemp or flax fibers and PLA bio-resin. This sustainable material choice not only delivers a high-quality finish but also reinforces the chair's natural inspiration. Measuring 770mm wide, 855mm deep, and 720mm high, Akhalteke is both a conceptual and functional piece, offering a unique identity within any space. The design process, which began in September 2023 in Tehran and concluded a year later, overcame significant challenges in balancing aesthetics, functionality, and user experience-ultimately earning recognition for its technical and creative ingenuity.

The Akhalteke lounge chair exemplifies how thoughtful research, sustainable practices, and a deep understanding of human experience can converge to create furniture that is both meaningful and innovative. Its recognition by the A' Design Award jury underscores its contribution to improving quality of life and advancing contemporary design.
