Solaris: Award-Winning Multi-Layered Wall Decor Merging Space Art, Literature, and Retro-Futurism

Solaris, the latest creation by designer Ismail Pehlivan, has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Decorative Items and Homeware category for 2025. This unique wall decor piece draws inspiration from the Voyager spacecraft's journey and the fictional planet Solaris from Stanisław Lem's celebrated novel, famously adapted by Andrei Tarkovsky. The design embodies the concept of a cosmic message returned to Earth, using a rhythmic sequence of layered forms to evoke the mysterious structure of Solaris and the human search for connection beyond our world.

Meticulously crafted from beech veneered MDF panels, Solaris features individually laser-cut and hand-painted layers in a vibrant gradient from orange to navy blue, reminiscent of an iconic sunset. The inclusion of two 45 RPM vinyl records and lathe-turned iroko wood spheres adds retro-futuristic and space art elements, further deepening the narrative behind the piece. The result is a visually complex and striking artwork that commands attention in any living space, blending artistic storytelling with technical precision.

The design process began in July 2024 and concluded in October 2024, involving extensive observation, research, and experimentation with materials and color palettes. Pehlivan's commitment to translating his vision into a tangible form required overcoming challenges in both drawing and paint selection. Solaris's intricate assembly and secure packaging ensure that each piece arrives ready to transform interiors with its multidimensional presence and evocative story. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes Solaris for its innovative integration of art, literature, and design, celebrating its contribution to contemporary home decor.
