Chi En Kuo's Dualcon, a versatile assistive device that seamlessly transforms between a walker and an electric-assisted scooter, has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its groundbreaking approach to mobility and independence, developed at Shih Chien University in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dualcon, designed by industrial design student Chi En Kuo, redefines assistive mobility by merging the benefits of a traditional walker with an electric-assisted scooter. Addressing the limitations of conventional devices, which often lack adaptability across different environments, Dualcon empowers users to transition smoothly between walking and riding modes. This innovation ensures greater flexibility, comfort, and independence for individuals navigating daily life, particularly seniors and those with mobility challenges.
The device's unique construction features a secure three-point connection system, including a pin with a screw structure, an adjustable clamp, and a train coupler-inspired latch. These elements guarantee a stable link between the walker and scooter, allowing users to switch modes effortlessly through a straightforward manual or electronic process. The transformation is intuitive: users align and lock the walker to the scooter for long-distance travel or easily detach it for short-distance walking, adapting instantly to changing needs and environments.
Dualcon's thoughtful design was realized over a six-month period at Shih Chien University, with a focus on user-centered operation and practical application. Its dimensions-1155mm in length, 670mm in width, and 980mm in height-ensure both stability and maneuverability. The project's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design category highlights its status as a well-designed, innovative solution that meets professional standards and enhances quality of life for users. Dualcon stands as a testament to the power of adaptable design in creating a more inclusive and independent future.
