Axel, created by Zagreb-based designer Ivan Levak and Iva Grgic, reimagines the traditional coat hanger with a focus on mobility, stability, and simplicity. Developed during the pandemic and first showcased at Salone Del Mobile 2023 in Milan, Axel addresses the needs of contemporary urban dwellers who frequently move between homes. Its unique design allows it to be easily disassembled into a flat, compact box for effortless transport, whether by hand or bicycle, making it an ideal companion for those living a modern, nomadic lifestyle.

What sets Axel apart is its innovative approach to stability: the more items hung on it, the steadier it becomes. Unlike conventional coat hangers that often struggle with balance, Axel leverages gravity and a central axis to enhance stability as weight is added. Constructed from just two main elements-a robust steel joint and solid oak wood legs-Axel is both lightweight and durable. The design's three-legged structure, connected by 18 screws, can support up to 15 garments, and its hand-built nature ensures easy repair and longevity.

Axel's assembly is straightforward, requiring only a single hex key and minimal effort, making it accessible for anyone to set up or move. Its minimalist aesthetic and compact footprint (170 cm tall, 44 cm wide, weighing 4 kg) allow it to fit seamlessly into small hallways and rooms. The product's thoughtful engineering, including inward-facing hooks and a central metal core, maximizes hanging space while maintaining a sleek profile. The recognition by the A' Design Award highlights Axel's contribution to quality of life and its embodiment of best practices in design, art, and technology.
