Che-Chia Hsu, a designer based in Taipei, Taiwan, has been recognized with the Iron A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award 2025 for his latest creation, the "Fine Interlock" chandelier. This innovative lighting fixture draws inspiration from the precision and beauty of traditional Chinese woodworking joints, particularly the dovetail, and reimagines them through the lens of experimental modeling and the helical form of DNA. The result is a breathtaking chandelier that not only illuminates spaces but also highlights the intricate craftsmanship of tenon joints in a thoroughly modern context.
The "Fine Interlock" chandelier stands out for its revolutionary approach to tenon construction. By merging soft tenon steps with CNC processing techniques, Hsu has overcome the traditional limitations of wooden tenon shapes, introducing new possibilities in both form and application. The chandelier is crafted primarily from aluminum, finished with a polished chrome plating to achieve a mirror effect, while transparent soft resin elements-produced via SLA 3D printing-allow light to pass only through the tenon joints. This design choice emphasizes the central theme and detail of the piece, making the tenon joint not just a structural element but the visual and conceptual focal point.
The development of "Fine Interlock" was marked by extensive research and collaboration. Hsu began by studying traditional tenon techniques through literature and hands-on learning from a woodcraft master. He then used 3D printing to test and refine his ideas, before consulting with an ironworker to adapt the design for metal fabrication. Overcoming challenges such as reimagining the structure for heavier materials and pushing beyond conventional design boundaries, Hsu's persistence has resulted in a chandelier that is both authentic and innovative. With dimensions of 840mm x 100mm x 20mm, "Fine Interlock" is a testament to the power of combining heritage craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, earning its place among the most respected lighting designs of 2025.
