Among Quillayes: Award-Winning Sustainable Mountain Bathroom Blending Architecture and Nature in Chile

HECTOR NAVA F's "Among Quillayes" has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award 2025 in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category. Located in the Arrayán mountain region of Lo Barnechea, Santiago, Chile, this project redefines the relationship between built space and the natural landscape. Completed between March and July 2024, the bathroom is designed around a majestic arrayán tree, serving as both a functional amenity and a testament to environmentally conscious architecture.

The project stands out for its commitment to minimal intervention, using locally sourced and sustainable materials such as natural stone, wood, and reclaimed railway sleepers. Its terraced platforms follow the natural topography, ensuring the structure blends seamlessly with its surroundings while optimizing views, light, and ventilation. Every design decision, from material selection to spatial layout, was informed by thorough site-specific research and a dedication to preserving the existing ecosystem.

Among Quillayes not only meets rigorous technical and regulatory requirements but also sets a new standard for sustainable architecture in sensitive environments. The project's rustic yet refined aesthetic, combined with its bioclimatic design and energy efficiency, minimizes its carbon footprint and enhances long-term ecological balance.
