Matweave Bench: Hand-Woven Microcrystalline Wood Outdoor Seating Wins Iron A' Design Award 2025

The Matweave Bench, designed by Chung Sheng Chen and his team at Tainan University of Technology, represents a breakthrough in outdoor furniture by combining the organic beauty of hand-woven microcrystalline wood with cutting-edge thermoplastic techniques. The project, which began in July 2024 and concluded in March 2025, was inspired by a desire to merge the tactile appeal of natural materials with the resilience required for outdoor environments. The bench's debut at the Tainan Mitsukoshi Department Store marks a significant milestone in contemporary furniture design, as it challenges traditional perceptions of wood's rigidity and introduces a new standard for both form and function.

What sets the Matweave Bench apart is its innovative use of microcrystalline wood, a material that becomes pliable when heated, allowing for the creation of soft, flowing curves typically unachievable with conventional wood. Despite challenges such as budget constraints affecting mold quality, the team succeeded in achieving a refined finish that highlights the bench's unique material properties.
