Trang Nguyen Thuy's Ba's Garden integrates farming into cities with automated hydroponics for eco-friendly, rapid microgreen growth, offering a transformative urban agriculture solution. Crafted from Earthenware, this self-sufficient system streamlines the growth process, ensuring reliable nutrition for plants.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ba's Garden is an innovative urban living solution that employs state-of-the-art soilless and self-watering techniques. This cutting-edge system utilizes a grid tray to enable plants' root systems to grow continuously, ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality nutrition. Additionally, it's also useful for germinating sprouts and microgreens that are abundant with essential nutrients that promote good health.
This component, comprising low and high pots and a germination-friendly tray, is crafted from Earthenware for resilience against environmental and temperature variations, maintaining optimal moisture for small seeds. The tray facilitates sprouting, retaining water for germination. Its adaptable grid accommodates seeds of any size, ensuring gradual water provision throughout germination, making additional watering unnecessary. A self-sufficient system, it streamlines the growth process.
The user-friendly and compact sprouting device is crafted for easy use with readily available materials. It features a simple installation process, operates without the need for soil, demands minimal watering, and is ideal for constrained spaces. This device excels in shaded areas at room temperature, constructed with sustainable materials for all its components. Users can relish the joy of growing plants with minimal time and effort, allowing harvesting within 5-7 days.
The project started in September 2022 in Lund and finished in December 2023. It was exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2023. The project employs problem identification, research, interviews, visual design, ceramics, and low-fi/high-fi prototyping. The challenge in designing the project stems mainly from the intricacies of existing germination tools. The setup of these tools involves a diverse array of materials like soil, hydrated mats, LED lights, and spray cans, resulting in excessive water and material usage throughout the entire sprouting process. Additionally, it is challenging to find comprehensive kits for different seed sizes, posing an additional hurdle. Ensuring precise germination through various methods has proven difficult, especially during the Rinse and Drain cycles, where meticulous attention is essential to prevent the potential danger of bacterial contamination, which could rapidly escalate during the sprouting process.
Ba's Garden concept achieves its goal through a sustainable project, integrating farming into urban spaces. Using fully automated hydroponic technology, the project grows microgreens 25-50 percent faster, with reduced water and energy usage, minimizing food waste. Compact, modular, eco-friendly systems make it accessible to all, with a soilless method and a self-watering system, plant roots continuously grow in a grid tray, providing high-quality nutrition efficiently. The products are designed to seamlessly blend into home decoration spaces with a subtle, natural, and friendly design language.
