Yu Watanabe's Lighting Project Embraces Shadows and Nature

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Radiance of Nature with Urushi

Yu Watanabe's "Radiance of Nature with Urushi" project is a captivating lighting installation that embraces the interplay of light and shadows, inspired by the Japanese appreciation for shadows as an aesthetic element. The project aims to revitalize the traditional craft of Urushi lacquer, sustainably harvested from natural sap in Japan, to create a meditative space that connects people with nature.

The installation consists of 16 cylindrical lights, ranging in diameter from 11 cm to 14 cm, and comes in four sizes: S, M, L, and XL. Crafted by skilled artisans, the Urushi lacquer is applied by hand to bamboo, creating a captivating play of light and shadows reminiscent of a microcosmic space in nature.

Through the arrangement of tree-like shapes, the project seeks to evoke a sense of being in a forest, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a meditative space that reflects the depth of darkness and the luminous glow of Urushi. The project was exhibited at Saint Central Martins in London, showcasing the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Yu Watanabe's "Radiance of Nature with Urushi" project is a testament to the designer's commitment to sustainability and cultural revitalization, earning the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in Lighting Products and Fixtures Design in 2024.
