Mian Wei Unveils Para: A Unique and Playful Addition to Public Outdoor Seating
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mian Wei, an award-winning designer and multimedia artist, has unveiled "Para," a set of public outdoor chairs designed to provide restrained flexibility in outdoor settings. The chairs boast a uniquely symmetrical form that deviates from the inherent visual balance of conventional chair design, offering a bold and modern addition to public outdoor seating. Inspired by the simple seesaw shape and the structure of a roly-poly, Para brings a fun interaction and freedom into mundane public outdoor seating, with the detail form and curvature inspired by pollen and flying seeds.
Para is a set of public outdoor chairs with an extremely low center of gravity, allowing for restrained mobility in flexible outdoor settings. Most public outdoor furniture is either fixed or heavily weighted and lacks adjustability, but Para's unique weight distribution enables easy rotation and flipping to user-preferred positions. The chairs are made of bent polycarbonate sheets supported by steel and polyethylene legs, filled with heavy fillings to increase weight, and measure 620 mm x 1200 mm x 820 mm.
Both Para A and Para B offer unique interaction features. Para A supports 360 rotation around its base, making flexible communal organization and communication effortless, while Para B supports bidirectional flipping, allowing for easy rearrangement of a line of public chairs in either direction. The chairs bring bold playfulness to public settings, offering users the freedom to choose and change their sitting direction freely and enjoy a new view of the park every day.
Mian Wei's Para was released in spring 2020 in the USA after a project period from January to February 2020. The design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation in furniture design.
