Marshall Wollum's Kodama Bar Stool, a Blend of Tradition and Technology, Wins Bronze A' Design Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Marshall Wollum's Kodama Bar Stool is a tribute to the "spirit of the tree," showcasing the beauty and sustainability of wood. Combining traditional woodworking with CNC router technology, this project achieves joinery of unparalleled complexity and precision. The subtle Japandi design, crafted from Walnut and Applewood, highlights the stool's unique wood joinery, ensuring its endurance for generations.
The innovative realization process involved programming a CNC router to delicately manifest the design through complex coding of toolpaths and precision workholdings. This pioneering approach opens the door to a new era of parametric design and manufacturing, allowing human creativity to flourish with unprecedented capabilities.
Measuring 45cm in width, 54cm in depth, and 66cm in height, the Kodama Bar Stool features visible and honest wood joinery designed to endure generations of daily use. The project commenced in 2016 in the mountains of Colorado and concluded in Southern California in March 2019.
Marshall Wollum's dedication to sustainable furniture design and innovative woodworking techniques has earned him the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021. This prestigious accolade recognizes the stool's outstanding craftsmanship, use of salvaged materials, and celebration of natural materials, as praised by John Conrad, Executive Director of the International Society of Furniture Designers.
