An Unconventional Coffee Table Inspired by the Anatomy of Beetle Wings
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Inspired by the kinesis and anatomy of beetle wings, the Elytra coffee table is a unique and innovative furniture piece designed by Radhika Dhumal. The table expands in size by spreading its wings, offering a dynamic and functional space-saving solution for modern living spaces. The design, dominated by rounded forms, gives the table a friendly, pet-like demeanor, and its four legs are positioned to create a unique, animalistic stance. Elytra's biomimetic design is a testament to the seamless integration of nature-inspired elements into functional furniture.
Elytra's standout feature lies in its non-static nature, allowing users easy access to increase the table's surface area. The table's surfaces are split into four broad parts, including a wooden 'head' and 'body,' as well as two glass-inlay wings that can be opened out simultaneously to expand the table's surface. This innovative mechanism provides additional space for storing items such as cups, planters, or a notebook, offering both practicality and aesthetic appeal.
The realization of the Elytra design involved an intricate process, starting with intense doodling and sketching, followed by scaled-down mockups using laser-cut MDF parts to figure out the kinetic mechanism. The final product was achieved through CNC cutting of teak wood, resulting in a precise and finished piece that embodies the designer's vision.
