Assistive Folding Chair for Standing Workers

Ming Hsiu Lee's Standly Bao is a game-changer for workers in service industries who endure prolonged periods of standing. The innovative folding chair aims to improve the physical well-being and working experience of individuals such as bartenders and street vendors.

Standly Bao stands out with its unique three-point pressure method, which reduces the pressure on the lower limbs, promoting a correct standing posture and mitigating the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues. The device's foldable design also ensures it can be easily stored, reclaiming valuable space in narrow work environments.

Measuring 550mm x 400mm x 760mm, Standly Bao offers a practical solution for maintaining a healthy standing posture while providing mobility and comfort. The device's functionality is further enhanced by its automatic return feature and foldable bottom panel, offering users added convenience and versatility.

Ming Hsiu Lee, along with Jui-Chung Hu, embarked on the Standly Bao project in July 2019 in Taipei, conducting extensive research and collaborating with physical therapists to ensure the chair's ergonomic design effectively addresses the needs of standing workers. The project culminated in the award-winning Standly Bao being showcased at the NTUST design graduation exhibition and receiving the Young Pin Design Award in 2020.

The designers' commitment to human factors research and their dedication to creating a practical and impactful solution is evident in the meticulous approach taken to develop Standly Bao. Through numerous prototypes and extensive testing involving hundreds of participants, Ming Hsiu Lee and Jui-Chung Hu successfully identified the most suitable dimensions and practical adjustments for the folding chair, ensuring its effectiveness for a wide range of users.

Standly Bao's exceptional design has garnered recognition, earning the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021 for its outstanding innovation, technical excellence, and positive impact on user experience. Ming Hsiu Lee and Jui-Chung Hu, as undergraduate students studying product design at NTUST, continue to demonstrate their passion for creating designs that make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
