Smallgran Unveils Xanxan: A Sustainable and Customizable Shelf Design

Smallgran proudly presents Xanxan, a groundbreaking shelf design that redefines the traditional concept of shelving. Conceived as a solution to reduce material costs and ecological impact, Xanxan offers unparalleled flexibility and adaptability to meet user and space needs.

Featuring customizable configurations and optimized transport and storage space, Xanxan consists of two anchor posts with a web of strings, incorporating a simple mechanism for users to adjust the tension of each string, providing a straight support surface. Notably, Xanxan uses seven times less wood, requires nine times less storage space, and weighs four times less than a standard shelf, while still offering the same functionality.

The realization process involves lathing hard Maple Wood and drilling holes for the screws and strings, allowing for both manual and automated production. With dimensions ranging from 300-1500mm x 220mm x 85mm, Xanxan can support up to 20kg of weight, making it a versatile and sustainable storage solution.

Smallgran's journey with Xanxan began at the Polytechnical University of Valencia, where the initial development took place, followed by seven months of dedicated work at the Valencia-based studio. The design was meticulously crafted through market research, concept modeling, and extensive prototyping, overcoming technical challenges to deliver a revolutionary product.

Smallgran's commitment to making design noticeable and understandable for the general public is evident in Xanxan's innovative and sustainable approach, earning the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2017. This accolade recognizes Xanxan's outstanding creativity, technical prowess, and contribution to improving quality of life.
