Diagonal: Redefining Table Geometry with Sleek Structure

Chris Chen introduces "Diagonal 45," a table design inspired by the geometric concept of a line segment joining nonconsecutive vertices. This concept forms a tension and draws a frame to establish a sleek and steady structure for a table.

Every element of the Diagonal table reflects the diagonal logic, from the layout of the walnut veneer tabletop to the structural skeleton that transmits force from the top to the stand. The positions of the two stands are also aligned with the diagonal guideline of the desktop, adding to the design's unique properties.

The table features a steel frame with a powder coating surface for the stand, while the tabletop is made of plywood with walnut veneer. With dimensions of 850mm in width, 1700mm in length, and 750mm in height, the Diagonal table offers a sleek and modern addition to any space.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Diagonal table is the void and solid interaction it offers. Depending on the viewer's angle, the table can give the impression of a modern steel frame glass building or a solid concrete structure. This balance between dynamic and static, void and solid, creates a captivating experience for anyone interacting with the table.

The Diagonal table project was completed in October 2017 and was brought to life in Taiwan. The design incorporates bevel details on the tabletop and a technique to distance the stand and tabletop, creating a floating illusion and adding to the design's visual appeal.

Chris Chen, the mastermind behind the Diagonal table, is a member of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers and the founder of Paradox Studio, a Taipei-based architectural and interior design firm. His innovative approach to furniture design has earned him accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021.
