FLOAT: Redefining Bubble Tea Experience

Fang Shih's FLOAT is a game-changing reusable cup designed to revolutionize the way individuals savor their bubble tea. With the aim of reducing the staggering environmental impact of disposable plastic cups and straws, FLOAT presents a sustainable and refreshing alternative for bubble tea aficionados.

Unlike traditional bubble tea cups, FLOAT eliminates the need for a straw while still allowing consumers to relish their favorite beverage. The innovative design features an inner cup that positions the bubbles above the drink, ensuring that both the tea and bubbles reach the consumer's mouth simultaneously as they tilt the cup. This unique approach not only enhances the drinking experience but also addresses the issue of consuming the uncooled bottom part of the drink, commonly encountered with straw cups.

Constructed using advanced plastic and silicone injection molding, FLOAT boasts dimensions of 106mm x 106mm x 236mm, offering a practical and eco-friendly solution for bubble tea enthusiasts. The project, led by Fang Shih and Tian-yu Wu, was initiated in November 2018 and successfully realized by December 2019.

The inspiration for FLOAT stemmed from the alarming environmental impact of disposable plastic cups and straws associated with the popular bubble tea culture in Taiwan. With over 1.5 billion cups of bubble tea sold annually in Taiwan alone, the need for a sustainable and user-friendly alternative became evident. Through extensive research, including surveys, interviews, and mind-mapping, the design team identified the challenges associated with existing reusable cups, leading to the development of FLOAT as a viable solution.

One of the most significant challenges encountered during the design process was ensuring optimal user experience. Countless iterations and adjustments were made to enhance the cup's usability and drinking fluency, emphasizing the team's commitment to delivering a superior product.

Recognized for its exceptional design and practicality, FLOAT has been awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2020. This accolade acknowledges FLOAT's innovative approach, meeting professional and industrial standards while contributing to a more sustainable world.
