Fuma Fujiwara Unveils Layer Stool at Tokyo International Furniture Fair 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fuma Fujiwara, a young designer from Okinawa, Japan, has unveiled his latest creation, the Layer Stool, at the Tokyo International Furniture Fair 2023. Inspired by the unique vegetation and culture of Okinawa, the stool is crafted from nine different types of Okinawan trees, showcasing their colors, smells, and textures. The project, which began in January 2023, addresses the need to utilize small-diameter trees and scrap wood for sustainable furniture production.
This innovative design utilizes upcycled discarded materials, proposing a new value for the colorful "Okinawa tree." The hand-carved seat features a gentle slope and a waist-fitting indentation, while the stool's compact and portable nature allows for easy transportation in flat-pack packaging. The Layer Stool's unique construction and utilization of Okinawan wood materials set it apart in the world of furniture design.
Fujiwara's mission is to convey the nature and culture of Japan to a global audience, and the Layer Stool represents a significant step in achieving this goal. The stool's debut at the Tokyo International Furniture Fair marks a milestone in Fujiwara's career, following his relocation to Okinawa in his 18th year and his dedication to studying design in the region's beautiful natural surroundings.
