Hydrospine: Redefining Freediving Weights

LAHCCEN LUDOVIC unveils the Hydrospine, a groundbreaking freediving weight system that redefines the standards of comfort, modularity, and safety in the world of freediving. The concept was born out of the need for a practical and comfortable weight system, leading to the development of a unique dorsal ballast that can support up to six kilos, providing ultra-precise buoyancy and neutrality. Inspired by sea animals and designed for optimal hydrodynamics, the Hydrospine offers a revolutionary approach to freediving weights.

Constructed with waterproof and durable materials, the Hydrospine features a thermoformed textile shell with a zipped side opening, allowing for quick and easy access. The internal structure includes slots to fix the leads, resembling a spine, and accordion ribs to accommodate all body movements. The leads, designed from a single template, maintain a hydrodynamic structure, covering 98% of user needs. Additionally, the rear nozzle ensures efficient air escape, enhancing the system's functionality.

Designed to be worn like a backpack, the Hydrospine is equipped with a quick-release buckle at the front, allowing for effortless adjustment and instant weight release with one hand. The envelope containing the leads features reception racks to securely hold the pellets in place, ensuring extremely precise balancing. Its versatility makes it suitable for all freediving activities and positions, offering unparalleled comfort and ease of use.

The Hydrospine project commenced in August 2019 in Lille, France, and continued at the Transalley incubator in Valenciennes, France, from September 2020 to September 2022. The design team, led by Ludovic Lahccen, includes product designers, technical and mechanical engineers, and experts in plastics processing and textile prototypes, ensuring a comprehensive and meticulous development process.

Recognized for its exceptional innovation, the Hydrospine has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Sporting Goods, Fitness, and Recreation Equipment Design category in 2023, highlighting its outstanding expertise and remarkable level of excellence.
