Rooted in design research and cultural storytelling, 3 Khan is a multifunctional, modular furniture set designed for children aged 1 to 7. It combines imaginative play, hands-on assembly, and elements of Persian heritage. Developed by MAD Studio under the direction of architect Nastaran Akbari and engineer Dr. Davood Manafi, this award-winning product aims to offer families a creative and meaningful alternative to traditional educational furniture. 3 Khan consists of interlocking wooden components that can be assembled into three distinct configurations: a single table, a double table, and a cozy cottage-like structure. The design encourages the development of fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and collaborative play between children and adults. Its puzzle-like joinery eliminates the need for tools, ensuring a safe and engaging experience. One of the product’s most distinctive features is its cultural narrative. Hand-painted illustrations from the Persian epic Shahnameh adorn the wooden panels, transforming each setup into a storytelling tool. These visual scenes invite children to explore themes of imagination, courage, and heritage, enriching the interaction between parents and children through shared storytelling. Beyond its functionality, 3 Khan redefines sustainable packaging—its box transforms into a reusable wooden truck, minimizing waste while adding play value. Following extensive prototyping, real-world testing, and feedback from educators and parents, 3 Khan stands as both a functional object and a meaningful cultural experience, bridging tradition and innovation in early childhood design.
