Romanian designer Ionut Sur's Prometheus ILight, an interactive pendant light inspired by Greek mythology and the pursuit of knowledge, has been awarded the Bronze A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2013, recognizing its creative blend of art, technology, and symbolism in lighting design.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prometheus ILight, designed by Ionut Sur from Pitesti, Romania, has earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category for 2013. This unique pendant light draws inspiration from the myth of Prometheus, symbolizing the act of bringing knowledge and enlightenment to humanity. The design masterfully combines two geometric forms-a sphere and a cube-to represent the duality of knowledge and its divine origins.
The sphere, measuring 60 cm in diameter, serves as a protective shell for the light, covered externally with wood veneer to symbolize mankind's initial understanding, and internally with 24K gold foil to reflect the complexity and brilliance of true knowledge. The light within emits a warm glow, signifying that only a fraction of knowledge is revealed. The cube, constructed from black acrylic and fitted with LED strips, represents the source-the Gods-and emits a cold, pure light, highlighting the boundary between divine and human perception.
What sets Prometheus ILight apart is its interactive mechanism: when switched on, a spring return actuator and a system of spur gears open five segments of the sphere, unveiling the golden interior and releasing the warm light. When turned off, the segments close automatically without the need for electrical power, thanks to the actuator's spring. This maintenance-free, compact system was engineered to ensure smooth, reliable motion and minimal weight, overcoming significant technical challenges in the process.
Though a physical prototype is slated for completion soon, Prometheus ILight has already been recognized for its innovative approach, blending mythology, mathematics, and advanced engineering. The award celebrates its contribution to the evolution of lighting design, offering both aesthetic and conceptual depth to contemporary interiors.
