Naai-Jung Shih's "A Dream" is a striking tabletop lighting installation that captures the elusive and surreal qualities of dreams through innovative design and material selection. The installation, measuring 80 by 70 by 35 centimeters, is constructed from hand-chained white hangers suspended on a transparent plastic string, all set atop a clear base with an upward-projecting light source. This arrangement gives the impression of weightlessness, as if the forms are floating in mid-air, and invites viewers to contemplate the boundary between reality and imagination.
The design process behind "A Dream" involved extensive experimentation with materials and connection methods to achieve the desired sense of transparency and fluidity. After testing various connectors, including steel cables and ropes, Shih chose a 3mm transparent plastic string, which provided both the necessary tension and visual subtlety. The installation's unique closed-loop structure was developed to symbolize the endless, cyclical nature of dreams, with each curved linear member representing a fragment of a propagating dream. The interplay of light and shadow further enhances the surreal experience, making the piece both a functional light source and an evocative work of art.
Designed to be placed on a table just below eye level, "A Dream" encourages viewers to explore its form from multiple perspectives, traversing inside and outside, up and down, and discovering new visual relationships with each angle. The relative position of the installation and its base can be adjusted, allowing for a personalized interaction with the piece. This project is the third in a series of installations by Shih that investigate the relationship between order, form, and light, each contributing to a deeper understanding of how abstract concepts can be rendered tangible through design. The recognition by the A' Design Award highlights the installation's creative ingenuity and its contribution to the field of art and design.
