Wai Ho Cheung's "Arctic" Coffee Table Wins Bronze at 2017 A' Design Award for Innovative Wave-Inspired Design

HONG KONG (CHINA) -- /INNOVATION/newswire -- Sep 20, 2016

Hong Kong-based designer Wai Ho Cheung has been honored with the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award 2017 for "Arctic," a striking coffee table inspired by tidal waves and park bench slats, blending dynamic aesthetics with practical functionality in a unique metal construction.

"Arctic" Coffee Table Melds Mathematical Waves and Functional Elegance in Award-Winning Design

Wai Ho Cheung's "Arctic" coffee table, recently awarded Bronze at the 2017 A' Furniture Design Award, redefines contemporary furniture by merging mathematical inspiration with practical utility. Drawing from the fluidity of tidal waves and the structure of park bench slats, Cheung crafted a table that appears to move, thanks to its dynamic base of looped, wave-shaped metal strips. The design's black finish, rooted in the Chinese Five Elements' association of water and the color black, further enhances the illusion of flowing currents, making the piece a striking centerpiece for any modern living space.

Functionality is at the heart of the Arctic coffee table. The interwoven metal strips and supporting frames not only create a visually captivating effect but also serve multiple purposes: the top corners double as CD stands, the undulating waves beneath act as magazine holders, and additional baskets can be hung on the frames for extra storage. This seamless integration of form and function exemplifies Cheung's belief that aesthetics should serve a practical purpose in contemporary design, ensuring the table is as useful as it is beautiful.

Developed in Hong Kong over the course of April 2016, the Arctic table was refined from an earlier prototype that used three materials, with the final version achieving a bold look using only painted metal. The project addresses the modern market's demand for products that combine high functionality, cost-effectiveness, and strong visual appeal. By overcoming the challenge of material reduction while maintaining dynamic aesthetics, Cheung has delivered a piece that not only meets but elevates the standards of modern furniture design. The recognition from the A' Design Award underscores Arctic's contribution to quality of life and its innovative approach to merging art, science, and technology in everyday objects.
