The Beke dining chair, designed by John G Williams in Johannesburg, has captured international attention by earning the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, a recognition reserved for practical and innovative creations that excel in both design and function. Inspired by the meaning of its name-"peace" and "to be connected to"-the Beke chair is crafted to offer users a sense of comfort and tranquility, while fostering engagement around the dining table. Williams' design philosophy is rooted in the simplicity of Danish Modernism, yet it integrates the sweeping profiles and motifs characteristic of South African Cape Dutch architecture.
What sets the Beke chair apart is its inventive construction and materiality. The seat is meticulously laminated from over twenty individually shaped hardwood profiles, resulting in a solid architectural form that is both visually striking and comfortable for extended use. The rear legs are engineered through a unique combination of steam bending and lamination, ensuring both elegance and long-term stability. The rails and backrest are shaped using techniques inspired by traditional coopering and architectural detailing, further reinforcing the chair's lightness and sense of peace. Each component is crafted to highlight the richness of local and international hardwoods, such as ash and walnut, while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic.
Designed and realized between March and May 2018, the Beke chair underwent extensive research and prototyping. Williams drew inspiration from the Carl Hansen library and his own previous designs, refining the chair through a process that prioritized simplicity and grace over complexity. The result is a dining chair that is not only functional and durable but also serves as a conversation piece, embodying both the Scandinavian ethos of lightness and the bold forms of African design. The Beke chair is easy to move, thanks to its hand-shaped backrest indent, and is engineered for comfort whether at the dining table or elsewhere in the home.
