Adel Alserhani's Marka, a multifunctional chair inspired by Bedouin heritage and designed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has been honored with the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award 2025 for its creative blend of cultural tradition, modularity, and sustainable materials, offering both communal and individual seating solutions.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Marka, designed by Adel Alserhani, is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Bedouin furniture, thoughtfully crafted to address the evolving needs of modern society. Rooted in the spirit of nomadic exploration and communal living, Marka seamlessly transforms from a modular armrest for two into a legless chair, all without the use of screws or glue. This flexibility encourages users to shift between social interaction and personal relaxation, reflecting both the communal and individual aspects of daily life.
The design draws inspiration from the Bedouin camel saddle, historically used as both a practical tool for travel and a piece of furniture when communities settled. Marka's construction features a base made from 100% recycled and recyclable polypropylene, sourced from local furniture and automotive industry waste in Saudi Arabia. Its padded cover and triangular pillow offer ergonomic comfort, while the modular panels allow for easy assembly and reconfiguration, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments, particularly in regions where floor seating is customary.
Marka's development was informed by extensive social and behavioral research, examining shifts in Arab social norms and the impact of modern lifestyles on community and well-being. The design aims to counteract growing social isolation by fostering genuine human connection through everyday objects. Its lightweight, portable structure and playful assembly invite users to engage in dynamic seating arrangements, promoting a sense of belonging and cultural continuity in a rapidly changing world.
