Chirp Peek: Award-Winning Outdoor Installation Merges Playful Design and Environmental Education in Urban Spaces

Chirp Peek, designed by Meiqing Tian, has been recognized with the Iron A' Playground Equipment, Play Structures and Public Park Design Award 2025, honoring its innovative contribution to public space and environmental awareness. Developed in New York between October 2023 and May 2024, Chirp Peek combines the functionality of a periscope and a bird feeder, enabling visitors to observe birds up close without disturbing their natural behavior. This playful and educational installation addresses the growing issue of "species loneliness" in cities, encouraging communities to reconnect with local wildlife.

Constructed from durable powdercoated aluminum and measuring 135mm x 187mm x 1135.5mm, Chirp Peek is designed for easy integration into parks, playgrounds, and community gardens. The installation invites users of all ages to engage with nature, while its minimal moving parts ensure longevity and low maintenance for public use. Staff can easily refill the feeder and maintain hygiene, supporting a high-quality visitor experience and the well-being of urban bird populations.

The development of Chirp Peek was informed by extensive research, including expert interviews with educators, naturalists, and urban planners, as well as feedback from park-goers and bird enthusiasts. This collaborative approach shaped a design that not only entertains but also educates, inspiring respect and responsibility toward the environment. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes Chirp Peek's success in integrating fun, functionality, and environmental stewardship into a single, accessible public installation.
