Crabee: A Modular, Playful Swimming Aid for Safer and More Enjoyable Water Learning Experiences

Crabee, designed by Lin Yu-He and a multidisciplinary team, is a new learning flotation device aimed at making water environments safer and more enjoyable for children aged 3 to 9. Inspired by alarming statistics from the World Health Organization regarding child drowning, Crabee addresses the critical need to reduce children's fear of water, a major risk factor in aquatic accidents. By integrating playful, interactive features, Crabee encourages positive early experiences with swimming and water play, supporting both safety and skill development.

What sets Crabee apart is its modular shell design, which allows children to assemble and modify the device according to their size and comfort. The product includes accessories such as periscopes and floating balls, enabling a variety of engaging games that cater to different swimming abilities. Children can throw, catch, and stack rings, use periscopes to explore underwater while staying afloat, and participate in treasure hunts with floating gems. This versatility not only makes learning to swim fun but also fosters adaptability and confidence in the water.

Crabee is constructed using high-quality EVA foam for durability and buoyancy, with periscope components made from PP and PC plastics for safety and optical clarity. The design process involved extensive research, including interviews with parents and swimming instructors, as well as child development benchmarks to ensure age-appropriate play. After overcoming challenges with material selection and manufacturing, the team finalized a robust, user-friendly product. With expert testing scheduled for August and a planned launch in mid-2025, Crabee is poised to make a meaningful impact on water safety education for children worldwide.
